Learning for Impact: My Journey with the Sustainable Development Goals
Recently, I had the opportunity to complete a certificate program on The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the University of Copenhagen—a course that left me both inspired and better equipped to make meaningful contributions in sustainability.
The program offered a deep dive into the 17 SDGs set forth by the United Nations, exploring the interconnectedness of global challenges like poverty, inequality, climate change, and sustainable resource use. What stood out most was how solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all—they require collaboration, creativity, and systems thinking rooted in local context.
As someone already embedded in Northern Michigan’s environmental and entrepreneurial spaces, this course reinforced how aligned my work is with the goals—whether through community-focused storytelling at M/K Studios, volunteer efforts with Surfrider Northern Michigan, or supporting local innovation through MTEC SmartZone.
One of my biggest takeaways? That even small, local actions contribute to global momentum. The SDGs aren’t just about government policy—they’re about how businesses, creatives, and individuals can embed sustainability into everyday decisions.
I'm excited to carry this knowledge forward, seeking out more projects and partnerships that drive positive change. If you’re working on initiatives tied to the SDGs—or want to start one—let’s connect!
